Dianne Sisk, the artist behind Legally Blind Art, has always had a creative spirit, but it wasn’t until recently that painting became her true calling. After retiring from a 25-year career in software sales and marketing, Dianne was diagnosed with a serious eye disease that forever changed her perspective on life and art.
Her journey began with a hole in her retina. Surgery using a gas bubble required her to remain face-down for a week, but because the hole was too large, it was unsuccessful. Further testing at Duke revealed that Dianne has Geographic Atrophy (GA), a progressive condition that slowly eats away at the retina. Today, her vision is so limited that she can no longer see a pill in her own hand, yet her passion for painting has only grown stronger.
When Dianne first picked up a paintbrush after her diagnosis, she realized something powerful: her time to create is precious, and each painting is not just art, but a legacy. Despite her challenges, she continues to pour her heart into whimsical works, abstract pieces, landscapes, seascapes, sunsets, and cityscapes that radiate imagination and hope.
Now, through Legally Blind Art, Dianne is committed to sharing her artwork with the world. She sells her paintings at fairs, art shows, and other in-person events, and she is also working on writing and publishing a book to inspire others to pursue their passions, no matter the obstacles.
For Dianne, every canvas is proof that vision isn’t only about sight, it’s about heart, resilience, and the joy of creating beauty in the face of adversity.
In the words of Dianne - "Leaving a legacy for my family is very important to me and that inspires me to move forward with my painting and writing."
"I did not pick up the paintbrush to be good, I picked it up to feel good." - Dianne Sisk
